Eric

Post by Drab on Mon Jan 04, 2010 7:08 pm

Eric was a dear old boy who came to us as a stray, a lady and her husband were returning home from the pub one Saturday night a couple of weeks ago, it was snowing heavily they saw this old pointer stood shivering in the street looking totally bewildered, they knew he wouldn't survive left outside for the night.
They took him home but the old boy couldn't put one foot in front of the other without collapsing so they carried him home. The next day they took him to the nearest vets to be scanned but he wasn't chipped, the vet clipped his claws which had been left to grow into his paws they were that long, he aged Eric at 10yrs + Eric then came to us.
He was reported to the dog warden and i said we would keep him to do his time with us if this old boy went to the pound he wouldn't survive the night. Eric was covered in tumours and bumps, he was painfully thin and had several anal tumours from not being castrated, he hated being on his own.
Last week Eric went to one of our few foster homes, he was only there two days when he was very ill and had to be pts, he was a gentle soul who must have given his best years to someone being their companion and friend, but where were they when he needed them?
A big thank you to Eric's fosterer's who were as upset as if they had had him two years not just two days, who gave him love and support in his final hours.
Run free at the Bridge old man be young and fit again. x

Now I am managing to work my way around this forum I had to add a post on Eric.
I feel such a privileged person to have known Eric, even though it was only for a short while.
I walked Eric for the few days he was at the kennels, he was such a graceful dog, a real gentle giant!
Despite being in his later years as soon as he could see I was going to take him out for a walk he'd get as excited as a puppy. He showed this by walking under and through my legs, which was not an easy task given I am only 5'2 and he was a big chap.
I hated leaving him back in his kennel as he would cry.
He touched my heart and everyone else's who looked after him at the kennels.
At least we had the opportunity, even for a short while, to show him that not all people are as callous as the ones that abandoned him that snowy night.
